Church of the Ascension

Frunze Street (former Savvinskaya Street) begins with the Ascension hill. In 1972 there was built the Church of Ascension at the place of an old wooden church. In 1838 warm aisles and belfry were built at the church at the expense of the merchant I.S. Starichenkov. In 1941 the church was dismantled. At the beginning of this century the church was rebuilt but this time according to the modern project in the Byzantium style.

The church’s destiny was uneasy. In the war time in 1812 the French destroyed the church. Upon the end of the war it was rebuilt and renewed. In 1838 the belfry was erected. The church became an integral part of Zvenigorod inhabitants’ spiritual life and acquired the status of the main town church. In 1922 the church was closed, no more divine service was held. There was located a grain barn and afterwards – a garage. In the spring of 1922 the church was completely dismantled.

The blessed territory was deserted for a long time and the wasteland was a dumb reproach to the town inhabitants. In 1998 the church restoration process began. At first a small chapel appeared. Later in 2003-2007 a new Church of the Ascension was built. The new church had different exterior view but the same altars. Today all the orthodox Zvenigorod inhabitants can admire the beauty of the four pillars five domes brick church built in the neo-Byzantium style - Church of the Ascension – the symbol of the town and traditions revival.
